Bail for David Rath, the disgraced Social Democrat power broker, has been set at CZK 14m (€564,000) by a Czech judge, though it hasn’t been decided when Rath would actually be allowed to pledge the money and leave police custody. This won’t be known until September, and in any case, Rath’s lawyer Adam Černý claims Rath’s family is unable to raise the necessary money. This will come as a surprise to those who have been looking into the staggering sums Rath is alleged to have made off during his reign as regional governor.
Nevertheless, Rath will supposedly have to look for somebody to pay the bail on his behalf, but the person must do so no later than September 3, when the next court meeting will be held. The court spokesperson Jiří Wažík said that the sum set as the bail reflects the seriousness of the crime committed and his high political position at the time of arrest.
