New tax to offset rising energy prices

20 August 2012

The Romanian authorities are to introduce a new tax on energy producers, set up to help poorer households meet rising energy costs.

According to the Finance Ministry, the new tax will hit companies that stand to benefit directly from deregulation of energy prices.

Deputy Finance Minister Liviu Voinea says it’s directed at those companies that are planning no new investments, and that stand only to gain from the freeing up of energy prices by the state energy authority.
