Brussels has called on Poland to cease manipulating the national debt level, adding the demand to the recent economic recommendations. The European Commission has approved a document that asks Poland to discontinue the practice of keeping two sets of debts statistics: national ones and European ones. The EU is pushing for Poland to focus only on the regulations recommended by European Commision, and calls the current practice a manipulation.
“Using the two measures of the national debt is against EU standards and reduces the transparency of Poland’s public finances,” said EC’s representative. “We hope Poland will begin unifying its statistics.” Poland has been estimating its debt this way for years, even though problem arise when the two figures fail to meet. “Of course, we’re aware the situation is not a coincidence,” wrote the EC, suggesting that the government in Warsaw is hoping to be able to avoid sharp budget cuts. “We hope that now, when Poland’s condition is improving, it will begin the process of codification,” writes the EC.
