Romania’s wind energy growth fastest in CEE

13 June 2012

Romania is a leader of Central and Eastern Europe regarding wind energy production, according to a report of the Programme for Sustainability Leadership from Cambridge University and the Regional center for energy policy research (REKK), reports the Agerpres news agency. The document, which includes data about Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary, was released in Sofia at a conference on “Policies for green economic growth in the Balkans.” Almost a quarter of all wind turbines in new EU member states are located in Romania, the document says.

The south-west of the country has the highest potential for wind energy generation. Romania’s photovoltaic solar energy capacity is larger than the Czech Republic’s or Hungary’s and even than Bulgaria’s. The national action plan for renewable energy provides an increase in photovoltaic energy to 260 MW by 2020, which is seen as a rather modest objective.
