Construction of the second bridge that would connect Romania and Bulgaria at Vidin to Calafat is 80 percent complete. The bridge will be fully operational by the end of this year, according to its general contractor FCC. The Spanish-based builder has completed the international rail terminal for passengers and rail freight from Vidin, writes Novinite.
The bridge itself is a Bulgarian investment, while the Romanian side is committed to providing road and rail access to the bridge in Romania. The idea of building a bridge between Calafat (Romania) and Vidin (Bulgaria) dates back to 1925, and was revided after the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999.
Completion of the current project was originally scheduled for October 2010, but work was delayed due to technical difficulties and claims from FCC.
