2013 national budget cuts all funding for Budapest transport

8 June 2012

It’s emerged that two months ago, when György Matolcsy, Economy Ministry and Budapest Mayor Isvan Tarlos were forced to sign a financing deal for the Budapest Transport Company (BKV) because the company was on the edge of bankruptcy. Under the deal, the state was to support BKV with HUF 22m. However, the newspaper Napi Gazdaság is now reporting that the proposed national budget for 2013 contains no support at all for the BKV. With time running out for a vote to be held, or revisions to be made before the summer recess, the fate of the metro could be left until December to decide.
