Government cancels restrictions on new hypermarkets

8 June 2012

The government has repealed a decision issued in 2004 referring to restrictions in opening of large retail stores, following European Commission and IMF pressure beginning last year.

The old government decree stated that the opening of retail structures with surface areas of over 1,000 sqm needed to be authorized by a locally established commission that would include representatives of local authorities, specialists from Professional Association of Consumer Protection and an economic agent in the immediate vicinity of the shopping center.
