Road DN 67 C, known as ‘Transalpina’, the highest road in Romania, is now 81.5 percent completed and is due for completion in September, according to Transport Minister Ovidiu Silaghi. He says the road, which begins in Sebes and runs through Gorj Country to end near Ramnicu Valcea, will cost RON 1.3bn.
It’s called the Transalpina road as it traverses a series of spectacular mountain passes and valleys, including a peak elevation of 2,145 meters. The new traffic artery will relieve the over-crowded Olt Valley road.
The first road to follow this route was built more than 2,000 years ago, by the Roman conquerors of Dacia. In 1930, it was restored and paved during the reign of King Carol II. The road has sparked controversy recently because of its high price tag: €4m per kilometer.
