25 May 2012

The National Environment Guard has fined OMV Petrom RON 100,000 for the leaking of oil into the Cotmeana River. The Ministry of Environment and Forest (MMP) said the spill affected 3 km of the river, and resulted from corrosion in a pipeline used for the transport of crude oil.

It released about 400 liters of saltwater and 500 liters of oil. According to the ministry, intervention teams responded promptly to stop the spread of pollution. After the incident, the minister of Environment and Forest demanded the Environmental Guard make a plan for controlling oilfields and pipelines operated by oil companies, in order to prevent similar situations in the future.
