Big Brother law passed

24 May 2012

The Chamber of Deputies has passed a law on the archiving of telephone and Internet data that’s been dubbed the Big Brother law.

It passed easily, with 197 votes in favor to just 18 who opposed the bill. Internet and phone providers will thus be required to store the personal data of their clients for six months and to provide requested information to security services within 48 hours of a request being made.

The law is intended to aid in the prevention, investigation and prosecution of serious crimes.
