Romania’s Senate has adopted a measure that would make it possible for state employees to be fired for a variety of offenses, including refusing to speak the Romanian language, insulting others, or for destroying or removing a national emblem.
The legislative proposal was initiated by the independent deputy Daniel Oajdea and it stipulates that public institutions may only hire employees who speak Romanian, and that all hirings must be preceded by a competition. Oajdea insists that the law would not affect minorities in Romania.
