The plague of plagiarism has proved contagious in Central Europe, as a member of the new Romanian governing cabinet has been accused of copying the work of a dean at the Institute of Technology in Haifa. Ioan Mang is suspected of copying the work of others in at least eight of his papers, charges he claims are politically motivated. There may be something to this, as he’s thought to have been behind some of the obstruction encountered by the last government in its attempts to reform Romania’s research system. Hungary has lost a president to plagiarism in recent weeks, and there were further claims that a former prime minister had also taken the easy route to completing some of his academic duties.
