IMF needs ’adequate steps’ first to start the talks

27 April 2012

Iryan Ivaschenko, the resident prepresentative of the International Monitary Fund in Hungary, announced that IMF welcomes the agreement between Hungary and the EU, and that IMF is ready to start the negotiation with the Hungarian government about potential financial aid. Talks could begin as soon as the government takes the ’adequate steps’ in order to ensure the Central Bank’s independency, she says. This means that the IMF needs concrete decisions and results in order to do begin discussions on Hungary’s financial assistance program. Tamás Fellegi, ex-Minister of National Development, who is the leader of IMF talks, says the situation is extremely complex, meaning that talks could take some time. He says that while Hungary is willing to negotiate, it will not make compromises at any cost.
