The coalition Czech government has been rocked by the dissolution of its members, the party Public Affairs. The party entered politics with what it called a fresh campaign for transparency, but descended into chaos over a widening scandal that hints at many of the wider suspicions of corruption that have plagued Czech politics for years. The government looks set to call for a vote of confidence this week in Parliament, but the prospect of early elections is unattractive for enough politicians currently in power that its conceivable that the government could hold power for months to come. There are concerns, however, that malcontents in the main party ODS could lead to unsustainable pressures if they try to force their hands in blocking, or pushing through, certain pieces of legislation.
