Romanian salaries shift during the crisis

4 April 2012

Romania has been caught in the economic crisis since 2008, a period of time that’s seen wages drop and the living standards of people fall.
While most wages were originally cut as the crisis unfolded, some workers have seen their pay level recover. Salaries of employees in textile factories, for example, have increased most, according to a study by Econtext.
It found that whereas they had been paid RON 1,000 in 2008, they were now earning RON 1,300. In the important automobile production sector, employee income rose 28 percent in the last three years, reaching almost RON 1,500.
Miners, meanwhile had watched their remuneration rise 30 percent to RON 3,000. Most of the wage hikes are being attributed to the country’s new labor code.
