Attila Mesterházy, president of Hungary’s socialist party was elected again, having received 70 percent of the votes. His nearest opponent was Tibor Szanyi. This was the first time in the socialist party’s history that the current president had a challenger. The party was tossed out of power in 2010 in historic elections that centered around corruption and mismanagement. Mesterházy called on all supporters of the Socialist party to come together by 2014 in order to oust the current FIDESZ-run government.
