In 2011 Romania covered more hectares of farmland with corn crops than any other EU members, while coming in second in terms of actual corn production, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS).
It also led the way in terms of the amount of land covered with sunflower crops, again coming in second in terms of production.
Romania was fifth largest wheat producer in Europe in 2011 (9th in productivity), harvesting 7.1m tons (up from 5.8m tons in 2010) from a total cultivated area of 1.92m ha.
Romania came third for total planted area for potato crops after Poland and Germany, and produced 4.1m tons in 2011, up from 3.2m tons in 2010.
