Doctoral degree Hungary’s president revoked

30 March 2012

The Hungarian medicine school Semmelweis University has stripped Hungary’s president’s Pál Schmitt of his doctoral degree as the fallout from revelations that he plagiarized his these spreads. The school’s president Tivadar Tulassy said Schmitt’s actions were not in accordance with the values of the institution. Just four of 33 members of the schoo’s senate voted against the action. The scandal had been festering since January when it was revealed that the president’s thesis quoted large parts of a paper written by a Bulgarian sport researcher. There have been calls for Schmitt to resign his post atop Hungary, but this is by no means certain.
