Government to announce agreement on pension reform

29 March 2012

An agreement on pension reform is expected to be announced today, following talks between the two government coalition parties PO and PSL on raising the retirement age to 67. The compromise came after Polish People’ Party (PSL) was able to push its proposal that those who chose to retire before the age of 67 wouldn’t forfeit their claim to a pension. Men who waited until age 65 are to receive 80 percent of what they would, while women can collect 50 percent of their total if they retire at age 62. However, the Solidarity trade union continues to demand a national referendum on the issue, having set up a ā€œretirement villageā€ outside the Prime Minister’s Office in Warsaw. The motion on calling a referendum is set to vote in Parliament on Friday.
