Since the beginning of the year, the state has taken control of 12 hospitals of Budapest and at 34 provincial hospitals. The government is forcing top managers at the hospitals to take part in competitions for their own jobs. In the past, a hospital director’s pay was based on the number of beds a hospital had, with the top earners making over HUF 1 million per month. In order to bring costs under control, some hospitals will have to cease operations of specific departments and types of care.
