PDL calls for constitutional referendum

20 March 2012

The Liberal Democratic Party (PDL) is calling for a constitutional referendum to be held in June that would see one of the houses of parliament abolished.
The PDL’s Emil Boc has called on opposition deputies to come back to parliament and vote on the matter, as it requires a two-thirds majority vote to be passed.
The unicameral parliament would have just 300 deputies, under the proposal. While there’s no indication as of yet that such an agreement is feasible, Boc is calling on the referendum to be held in June at the same time as planned local elections.
This is so the parliamentary elections scheduled for this autumn could be under the rules of the new constitution.
