Orban warns against colonialism

Using Hungary’s most important national holiday as a backdrop, prime minister Viktor Orban attended one of a number of commemorations of Hungary’s revolts against the Habsburg empire in 1848 to give a speech in which he declared that Hungary must not allow itself to become a colony once again. The comments are being seen as a rebuke of the European Union’s decision to revoke cohesion fund payments due to Hungary’s inability to keep the lid on chronic budget deficits. The days was also marked by anti-government demonstrations
