New law would radically revamp Hungarian parliament

15 March 2012

FIDESZ is pushing through a new bill that would radically reduce the number of deputies in parliament. Under the proposed legislation, the Parliament would have just 199 members, instead of the current 386. The new law would also allow the 13 registered minorities in Hungary to have a deputy in the Hungarian Parliament. If they were unable to send a deputy, they could delegate a so-called spokesman who would not have the right to vote. Beginning in 2014, MP’s will not be able to hold any other state office, ending a practice in which politicians had to split their duties as mayor of a town and the parliament in Budapest.
