More than 3.4 millions Poles bought smart phones last year, Rzeczpospolita daily reports, adding that the number is expected to grow to 6 million in 2012. What’s surprised telecom experts is that only a small fraction of smart phone owners users go on-line with the devices, as it begs the question of why they purchase such tech-heavy gadgets in the first place. Instead, for the most part, they make calls and send text messages, but little else. “Mobile internet is still a marginal service in our country,” says Henryk Kułakowski, CEO of MassPay. “Smartphones sales are growing rapidly but their owners do not use them to surf the web. This is mainly the result of high data transmission fees, and lack of knowledge on how to use them,” he adds.
