The dream of independence from Russian gas supplies might be putted an end for Poles by Brussels creating the regulations that might block shale gas exploration across Poland. Even though Polish shale gas is estimated at 5.3 trillions sqm and the state-owned energy giant PGNiG is ready to start the work on the exploration this year, Poland might have been left with no allies in the European headquarters. On Wednesday, French deputies have decided to ban hydraulic fracturing, the main technology used in the shale gas extraction. The stakes is high, claims Maciej Kaliski, head of the department of oil and gas in the Ministry of Economy, as there are groups in Brussels that want to restrict the role of shale gas in Europe. Jan Krasoń, a famous geologist says that a strong Gazprom lobby is what stands behind French decision.”Some 80 percent of energy in France comes from nuclear sources. Shale gas poses competition for their energy sector,” said Krasoń to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily. On the other hand, Poland is to be promoting a shale gas energy during its presidency expecting extraction plan to be a common European project. It has already been revealed, that the matter is to be discussed during Barack’s Obama visit in Poland, on May 27.
