Poland: 74% of people pay cashless in supermarkets, 58% in pharmacies

13 March 2024

Cashless payment in supermarkets is declared by 74% of people, according to the PolCard from Fiserv survey “Payment preferences of Poles 2024”. The next most popular cashless payment points are pharmacies (58%) and petrol stations (57%).

“As in the first edition of our survey, supermarkets are the place where we settle most often by card, phone or watch. This is now the answer given by 74% of Poles. Supermarkets are the most popular regardless of the respondents’ place of residence or education,” said Krzysztof Polończyk, president of Fiserv Polska.

Other places where respondents settle without cash are: pharmacies (58%), petrol stations (57%), drugstores and beauty shops (47%), small neighbourhood shops and bakeries (45%) and restaurants (42%). On the other hand, Poles are least likely to pay cashless at tutors or extra classes (4%), as well as at shoemakers and tailors (6%), it was also reported.

The survey also shows that consumers are also keen to use additional services available at payment terminals, such as paying with loyalty cards, gift cards or vouchers (25%), withdrawing cash from a shop’s checkout, so-called cashback (22% ), or recharging a phone (17%), among others.

“As far as cashback is concerned, i.e. withdrawing cash from a shop’s checkout just like from an ATM, it was used by 22% of respondents and is ranked third in our survey. Moreover, this service is most popular among the youngest respondents between the ages of 18 and 29, so we can predict that more and more people will use it in the future,” Polonczy said.

Other additional services used by Poles include the possibility to leave a tip, e.g. in a restaurant (15%), to buy a periodic public transport ticket directly on the payment card (10%) or to deposit cash on the card at a shop checkout, as in the case of a cash machine (7%).

The study was commissioned by Fiserv Polska – the owner of the PolCard from Fiserv brand – by means of standardised computer-assisted telephone questionnaire interviews (CATI) by the Institute for Market and Social Research (IBRiS) in January 2024. A representative group of adult Poles took part in the study. Sample n = 1,000.
