Tipping is becoming the norm for couriers when delivering food, and the amount depends not only on the location but also the time of year. According to an analysis by logistics and technology start-up Bevy.city, the average tip is CZK 13 per order. Couriers can thus earn around CZK 500 a day on top of their standard earnings.
“Customers give the highest tips around the middle of the month, i.e. just after payday, while the turn of the month tends to be the weakest. We observe a similar trend at Christmas, when people are generally more generous,” says Ladislav Janckulík, founder of logistics and technology start-up Bevy.city.
The amount of tipping also depends on location, with the highest tipping rates in big cities. In Prague, a courier costs on average more than CZK 13 per order, in Brno or Pilsen CZK 11.
“The reward for couriers in the form of tips is a significant benefit. On average, they can increase their earnings by CZK 500 per day during standard working hours. At the same time, it is also another feedback for us and the couriers. If tips do not drop significantly or, on the contrary, rise, it means that we are doing our job well and customers are satisfied, adds Ladislav Janckulík, founder of the logistics and technology start-up Bevy.city.
The habit of rewarding couriers with tips grew significantly during the covid period, when a large percentage of households got used to ordering groceries online. Some online food retailers have added the option to set the tip amount directly within the order, reinforcing this trend.
However, customers’ willingness to reward the courier with a tip is in the vast majority of cases only related to the delivery of food, whether groceries or ready-to-eat food. In the case of parcel deliveries, the courier is rarely thanked with a small cash payment.
