ID Logistics has started making the first zero-emission deliveries for PepsiCo Polska in Warsaw. The electric vans are already delivering goods to points of sale located in the city centre. At the same time, this is an important and first step of ID Logistics’ Transport Department towards building a low-emission transport fleet in Poland.
ID Logistics makes regular last-mile deliveries for PepsiCo using 18 vans. Based on past experience, environmentally friendly measures and in view of the upcoming changes in Warsaw (SCT, New Warsaw Centre), PepsiCo and ID Logistics decided to expand the last-mile fleet with Renault Trucks Master E- Tech Electric vans, selected for optimisation and efficiency of deliveries in urban distribution. They are designed to transport palletised loads and smaller parcels to restaurants, clubs, shops, school shops, fitness clubs and shopping malls located in the very centre of Warsaw, covered by the Clean Transport Zone (SCT) from July 2024. Each of the electric cars makes a minimum of two trips a day, making dozens of deliveries of goods each day from PepsiCo’s cross-docking centre in Warsaw’s Białołęka district. The 8-pallet cars are equipped with new-generation batteries with a capacity of 52 kWh, allowing them to travel up to 160 km on a single charge. To charge them, 22 kW mobile DC chargers are used, which not only speeds up, but also makes it easier for ID Logistics to plan and optimise routes.
“From 2021, we are implementing our pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) strategy, which aims to transform the company towards sustainability, covering all areas of our business. Due to the frequency of deliveries in the FMCG industry, logistics is a special part of the strategy,” says Paweł Poniedzielnik, Logistics Director, PepsiCo Poland, “We want to be zero-emission by 2040 and modernising the fleet that gets our products to consumers is key.”
BENEFITS PROVEN BY TESTING
In preparation for the start of deliveries and the selection of electric cars, ID Logistics’ Transport Department carried out tests, taking into account not only the level of CO2 emission reduction, but also, among other things, the costs of daily operation. Here, the benefits relate to the ability to provide fast deliveries to city centre outlets (bus lanes) and the exemption of cars with green plates from parking fees in the SPPN (Paid Unattended Parking Zone).
“Our drivers also received specialised training, provided by Renault Trucks, on the operation and optimal driving of electric vehicles. The training included topics such as energy recuperation and understanding the impact that driving dynamics have on the efficiency of deliveries in urban conditions,” – explains Adam Olejnik, Electromobility Project Manager, ID Logistics Polska.
ZERO-EMISSION EMBEDDED IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
It is worth noting that PepsiCo and ID Logistics place a strong emphasis on environmentally friendly measures and the prevention of climate change. For ID Logistics, the expansion of its transport fleet with electric vehicles is another element of the implementation of its global CSR strategy, based on three pillars: employee, environmental and social. It demonstrates the importance of the company’s commitment to sustainable supply chains while maintaining the highest standards of logistics services.
“The inclusion of electric cars in ID Logistics’ fleet will certainly allow us to gain new experience and know-how in managing green supply chains. We want to actively support our customers in achieving their pro-environmental goals by offering new sustainable solutions, also in the field of zero-emission transport.” – emphasises Piotr Mroczka, Transport Director, ID Logistics Poland.
WAREHOUSING AND TRANSPORT
The collaboration between ID Logistics and PepsiCo began in 2018. For four years, the operator has been managing operations at PepsiCo’s central warehouse in Mszczonów, the largest in the Polish distribution network. It handles items (dry products, fizzy drinks and juices, salty snacks) delivered from factories in Grodzisk Mazowiecki, Tomaszów Mazowiecki and Michrów near/Grójec. The ID Logistics Transport Department is also responsible for distribution and organisation of deliveries to points of sale.
