Builders are continuing the extensive reconstruction of the Bezruč quarter in Bojkovice in the Uherské Hradiště Region. The reconstruction, which began last year, mainly includes the repair of roads and pavements. The value of the contract is about CZK 90 million, of which about CZK 70 million will be covered by a European subsidy from the Operational Programme Environment. It is one of the biggest investments made by the city in recent years.
The work should be finished by November. “Last year we managed to do about a third in volume, so two thirds remain,” the Mayor said. Construction crews will replace the surfaces, and asphalt on the sidewalks will be replaced with seepage pavers, which keep water in the landscape and keep water from draining away through the sewers.
In some sections, the repairs will also include things like street lights. Some neighborhood residents are using the construction activity to replace sewer or water connections. “The first connections that were made in the area date back to the 1970s. So after 50 years, people are happy to take advantage of that and replace them,” Viceník said.
The construction entails significant traffic restrictions. Pedestrians have to go around the excavated sections in a different way, while motorists use detour routes. Some parking spaces are also temporarily unavailable. “Of course, we are trying to work it out in such a way as to restrict the citizens really minimally. But without restrictions, it’s just not possible. Again, we’re doing something that will serve for the next 50 years,” Vicenik said.
Bezruč’s district, which is on the southern edge of the city, consists of three interconnected parallel streets with single-family and apartment buildings. According to the mayor, 500 to 600 people live there. Bojkovice has a total population of approximately 4,400.
