Renovation of the Smíchov railway station for CZK 4.14 billion will start next year

28 December 2023

The modernisation of the Smíchov railway station in Prague will start at the beginning of next year and will cost about CZK 4.14 billion excluding VAT. The Railway Administration will have all the station tracks and platforms repaired, rebuild both underpasses and extend them under the whole station. The platforms will be accessible to the disabled by new lifts. The work will be carried out for SŽ by the consortium of Metrostav TBR, OHLA ŽS, Hochtief CZ and Elektrizace železnic Praha, which won the tender, said spokesman of SŽ Dušan Gavenda yesterday.

The municipality also plans to build a transport terminal connecting all types of public transport in Smíchov and a P+R parking lot will be built there. The councillors have already approved the tender for the construction for CZK 8 billion.

“The start of the main phase of the reconstruction was preceded by the removal of part of the tracks and the original footbridge over the station. Now the track will be completely rebuilt, three existing platforms will be restored and one new one will be built. This will be used mainly by trains in the direction of Prague-Zličín and Hostivice,” said Gavenda.

The administration will have the underpasses repaired, which will be extended under the entire track to the future parking house, whose investor is the capital city. Access to the platform will be barrier-free. The project also includes the construction of a footbridge towards Radlická Street, which will allow people to access individual platforms and will also connect the station with the new district being built in Smíchov.

The bridge over Nádražní Street will be a three-track bridge after the reconstruction is completed. According to SŽ’s idea, it will be connected to a new three-track bridge between Smíchov and Podskalí, which will replace the current railway bridge over the Vltava River.

“Another immediately related construction will be the construction of the modern Smíchov terminal, whose contractor is already being sought by the Prague City Council,” said Gavenda.

The terminal will replace the Na Knížecí bus station and will include a P+R car park. In addition to suburban and long-distance railway stations, it will also include a metro and tram station, and stations for urban and suburban bus and trolleybus and electric bus lines. A large-capacity car park will be built to the west of the railway station.

Smíchov railway station was opened as the second large station in Prague in 1862. The current station building was built in the 1950s, when the original buildings were not preserved due to damage during World War II. The station is one of the busiest railway junctions in Prague, along with the main station, to which it was connected ten years after its creation, and Masaryk station.
