Poland: Current consumer confidence index and leading indicator rose m/m in October

The Current Consumer Confidence Index (BWUK) rose by 2.4 percentage points m/m to minus 17.9 points in October this year, according to a survey conducted by the Central Statistical Office (GUS).

Among the components of the index, ratings of the current financial situation of the household and the current economic situation of the country improved the most (increases of 4 percentage points and 3.6 percentage points, respectively). Ratings of the current ability to make important purchases and the country’s future economic situation also reached higher values (increases of 2.8 percentage points and 2.5 percentage points, respectively). Lower values than a month ago were recorded only for assessments of the future financial situation of the household (down 1.2 percentage points), GUS reported.

With respect to October 2022, the current BWUK value is 27.6 percentage points higher.

The advance consumer confidence index (WWUK), which synthesizes expected trends in personal consumption in the coming months, increased by 1.3 percentage points from the previous month and stood at -8.1.

The leading consumer confidence index (WWUK), which synthetically describes the expected trends of individual consumption in the coming months, increased by 1.3 percentage points from the previous month and formed at -8.1. The increase in the value of the index was most influenced by assessments of the country’s future economic situation and the future level of unemployment (increases of 2.5 percentage points and 2.4 percentage points, respectively). An increase (by 1.5 percentage points) also occurred for assessments of the possibility of future money saving. Only the assessment of a household’s future financial situation (down 1.2 percentage points) was lower than a month ago, GUS reported.

In October this year. WWUK reached a value 27.6 percentage points higher than in the corresponding month of 2022.

In the period October 2-11, 2023, 1,483 interviews were conducted.
