The Prague City Council will reconstruct the apartment building in Moskevská Street, which it previously took over from Prague 10. According to the approved document, the renovation of the building is to cost CZK 50 million and after the reconstruction it will be used as flats for urban rental housing. Prague 10 previously considered selling the property, but in the end the councillors approved its transfer to the municipality.
“With this print we are starting the reconstruction, there will be ten small flats and there will also be non-residential premises on the ground floor, which can be used for a café, food or other services,” said Deputy Mayor Alexandra Udženija (ODS). She added that the renovation should be completed by the end of next year.
The building on Moskovska Street was originally built in 1935 by the Bata company as a shop with apartments for employees. Later it was used for housing and some of the flats were converted into offices. The Bata company operated a shop on the ground floor of the building, but terminated the lease in 2019. At the end of the same year, the Prague 10 City Council decided that the municipality would sell the building through an electronic auction. Subsequently, the municipality expressed interest in the building.
The municipality and the city districts now have about 30,000 flats out of the original 194,000 that came into the city’s ownership after 1991. Privatisations followed, which reduced the city’s stock by more than 80 percent. The city administration wants to increase the number of public housing units again and thus ensure affordable housing for, for example, representatives of professions essential for the city’s operation.
