The Pardubice Region is gradually implementing projects to make better use of rainwater in some of its schools and social facilities. They have been created at the Chvaletice Agricultural Secondary Vocational School and the Home under the Žampach Castle, while another is being prepared at the Agricultural and Veterinary Secondary School in Lanškroun, according to Michele Vojáček from the governor’s office.
Thanks to support from the National Environment Programme, two retention tanks with pumps were built at the school in Chvaletice, Pardubice, to which rainwater from the buildings is channelled. They will be used to irrigate trees, lawns, shrubs and other greenery. The total cost amounted to CZK 8.2 million, of which almost CZK 6 million will be covered by a subsidy. The rainwater will save the school operating costs, and in addition to the placement of the tanks, sidewalks have also been improved and greenery added.
At the Home under the Žampach Castle in the Orlickoústec region, which cares for people with disabilities, rainwater is collected in a pond where wetland plants can be planted in the future. The county also had a 210 cubic metre retention tank installed on the site. It is incorporated into the terrain so as not to disturb the character of the park, and the water from it will be used for watering. The total cost is CZK 8 million, of which almost CZK 5 million comes from a European Union grant.
Improvements in rainwater management are also planned, for example at the Secondary School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in Lanškroun in the Orlickoústec region. Three retention tanks will be built on the campus to receive rainwater from the roofs. It will then be used not only for watering, but also for washing the cowshed or scraping the riding stables. The cost is estimated at more than CZK 18 million, and the regional government has already received a CZK 14 million subsidy from the State Environmental Fund.
The region is also planning to improve rainwater management at the Veská Children’s Centre in Sezemice in Pardubice, the Moravská Třebová Aftercare Hospital in the Svitava region and the Brandýs nad Orlicí Rehabilitation Institute in the Orlickoústec region. In addition to watering the greenery, water will also be used to flush toilets.
