Renting apartments in buildings with seismic earthquake risk 1, prohibited

5 October 2023

A new restriction on the rights of owners of apartments in blocks of flats at risk of collapse in the event of a magnitude 7 earthquake is under parliamentary debate. The government-initiated bill, which has already passed the Senate, bans the renting of flats in earthquake-risk I blocks. From August 2023, a ban on commercial activity and advertising in blocks with seismic risk I and II is also in force.

“It is forbidden to rent or lease/let premises for residential use in buildings classified in the technical expertise report in seismic risk class RSI, until the completion of the intervention works carried out in order to increase the level of safety to seismic actions of the existing building,” is mentioned in the article.

In Bucharest alone, there are almost 400 buildings assessed with seismic risk I. Most of them are in the central area of the city, in the Old Centre, Magheru and Balcescu boulevards or Calea Victoriei.
