Sokolov wants to sell last boarded-up house in formerly troubled area

The town of Sokolov wants to sell the last house near the Alfa cinema in Hornická Street. The company Sokolovská uhelná, which has already reconstructed ten apartment buildings in the area and is now renting out the renovated flats, has expressed interest in the building. Thanks to the renovation of the houses, the formerly problematic area is becoming a popular place to live. The journalists were informed about this today by the deputy mayor Jan Picka (nez.).

The town hall wants to offer for sale a house with four entrances, where there are about thirty apartments. Most of them are without tenants, some of the ground-floor flats are bricked up. The whole building is in poor technical condition and requires expensive repairs.

“We have been approached by Sokolovská uhelna with the idea that they would be interested in buying the building from the town. They would like to renovate it and offer it for use again,” Picka said. The town hall therefore commissioned an expert’s report, which set a minimum estimated price of CZK 5.4 million. In the autumn it would like to announce a tender.

Most of the apartment buildings near the Alfa cinema were originally owned by the city. More than 20 years ago, however, they were sold to a private owner who let most of them fall into disrepair. The area was considered socially excluded. Sokolovská uhelná bought the houses in 2018 and has been renovating them ever since. Thanks to this, the situation in the area has calmed down, which is perceived positively by the town and neighbouring residents. There is currently a lot of interest in housing there.

Sokolov, which still owns several plots of land there, has plans to develop the site in the future. The construction of additional parking areas or a playground for children is under consideration. The adjacent land to the houses could then be rented out by the town as private gardens.
