The Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin has signed a contract for the construction of a facility for a landmark clinical, teaching and research investment. The state-of-the-art, regionally unparalleled project will provide comfortable conditions for the development of the university’s specialised units, significantly support its teaching facilities and create a base for a team of outpatient clinics at PUM’s Independent Public Clinical Hospital No. 1. All of this will improve the quality of the conditions for education and scientific activity at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, as well as the treatment of patients.
By means of a public tender, the most favourable offer of nearly PLN 519.8 million gross was submitted by a consortium consisting of Korporacja Budowlana DORACO (leader) and PORR (partner). As agreed, the investment will take 33 months to complete.
With the signing of the contract, the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin is starting a key investment to modernise and expand the university’s infrastructure. The building, together with the technical infrastructure and land development, will be constructed at Unia Lubelska Street in Szczecin, opposite the PUM SPSK-1 clinical hospital. The investment will be carried out under the ‘design and build’ formula and will be commissioned in the first half of 2026. The architectural design of the investment was prepared by the DEDECO Architectural Office.
“This is an investment of historical significance not only for the university, but also for the entire region. I would like to thank all the employees of PUM and Clinical Hospital No. 1 who took part in the preparatory work and will participate in the next stage of its implementation. The signing of the agreement is the culmination of many of our efforts, also in terms of increased funding for this purpose. I would also like to express my thanks to the Council of Ministers, which has adjusted our Multiannual Programme. This modern clinical, teaching and research building, which is the most important element of the Multiannual Programme, will certainly become a landmark of our university. The building will house sixteen clinical and teaching units, including the Centre for Translational Medicine and the Collegium Pharmaceuticum. There will be 49 teaching and lecture rooms, including an auditorium with more than 400 seats, as well as laboratories, outpatient clinics and an underground car park with approximately 600 parking spaces, also available for patients of the hospital in Unii Lubelskiej Street. We are creating excellent conditions for the training of future medics in various fields, as well as a treatment base for patients not only from Szczecin, but from all over Poland,” adds Rector Machaliński.
Under the contract, the consortium will be responsible for producing design documentation and constructing a building entitled the Centre for Translational Medicine and Collegium Pharmaceuticum of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. The scope of the order will include, among other things, the reconstruction of the road in the course of ul. Unii Lubelskiej on the section from ul. J. Zimowskiego to ul. S. Klonowica, the reconstruction of the conflicting infrastructure and the construction of an underground corridor. The subject of the contract also includes the redesign of part of the building, together with the change of some of the functions of the rooms and the construction of a clinical, didactic and research building together with the necessary infrastructure and land development. The total usable area of the facility will be approximately 49 000 m², which can be compared to the area of more than seven football pitches.
“After the realisation of the Pogoń Stadium, this is another challenging and interesting project in Szczecin. Together with our partner, we will be able to make use of our extensive expertise and experience in the construction of large, cubic and multifunctional facilities. The scale of the order can be seen by the need to drill some 51 km of boreholes for ground-source heat pumps. This will represent one of the largest total lengths of boreholes drilled in Poland. In turn, a technical and organisational challenge will be the construction of an underground corridor under Unii Lubelskiej Street, connecting the newly constructed building with the existing hospital building of the SPSK-1 PUM. As part of the investment, we are also obliged to develop a digital as-built model of the building, which in the future will serve to manage the completed facility and optimise the costs incurred,” said the President of the Management Board of Korporacja Budowlana DORACO, Andżelika Cieślowska
“Together with our partner, we are embarking on a new task with full commitment of our resources and competencies. On the part of PORR, this is experience in the implementation of many large and complex investments, such as, among others, the new headquarters of the University Hospital in Krakow-Prokocim or the Medical Simulation Center of the Warsaw Medical University. We are pleased that once again we will be able to co-create space for the development of Polish medicine,” said Piotr Kledzik, CEO of PORR S.A.
