EFG increases the capacity of the biogas plant in Vyškov to produce biomethane

22 August 2023

In August, the Energy Financial Group (EFG) started the planned expansion and modernisation of the EFG Vyškov BPS biogas plant. The group is investing CZK 200 million to increase the waste processing capacity and optimise the operation of the new biomethane plant. The new capacity of the plant should be able to accommodate 30,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste per year, starting at the beginning of next year, when the launch of green gas production is also planned.

The biogas plant in Vyškov, which has so far only produced green electricity and heat energy, has been undergoing extensive modernisation since August. EFG’s aim is to install a new biomethane production unit to coincide with the planned expansion. “Thanks to the installation of the biomethane unit, our station in Vyškov will now be able to convert biogas into a full-fledged substitute for natural gas. This innovation will contribute to the stability of gas deliveries, which represents another step towards energy self-sufficiency,” says Pavel Bureš, Technical Director of EFG.

The waste reception hall in Vyškov will also be expanded and equipped with a new air-conditioning system with air purification to eliminate odours from the processed waste. Specifically, the processing capacity of the station will be increased from the current 12 to 30 thousand tonnes of biodegradable waste. “Also, waste sorting will be ensured in the extended hall of the station with a completely new technology that will automatically separate waste from the original packaging, similar to our Rapotín biomethane plant. This solution will help us to process the incoming waste more efficiently and will also enable our facility to receive a wider range of organic components that are suitable for the production of green gas, electricity and heat,” explains Pavel Bureš.

As part of the transformation of the plant into a modern biomethane production facility, a new glass-feeding sump and gas storage tanks are also planned. The site will also be expanded to provide administrative facilities for the new employees of the station and additional premises for the fleet of the EFG Waste Logistic subsidiary will be built. The latter transports biodegradable waste from the adjacent regions to the EFG Vyškov BPS and EFG Rapotín BPS bio-gas stations. It also runs the “tridimgastro.cz” service, which helps Czech municipalities and towns with the separation and collection of gastro-waste. In many of them, the number of brown bins for kitchen waste is now increasing thanks to the responsible approach of citizens to sorting. Citizens can dispose of a wide range of this food waste in these, even with half-water packaging.

The EFG Group will invest CZK 200 million to convert the Vyškov station into a modern biomethane production plant. It plans to start biomethane production after the expansion of the site in the first quarter of 2024.
