PIE: Ukrainians have established 29.4 thousand business activities in Poland since spring 2022

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine until the end of June 2023, 29.4 thousand Ukrainian sole proprietorships have been registered in the CEIDG database, the Polish Economic Institute (PIE) reported. The predominant industries include construction, information and communication, and services.

“In 2022. Ukrainians established nearly 16,000 sole proprietorships in Poland. Admittedly, from October to December 2022 we saw a decrease in the rate of new business creation, but 2023 brought record volumes. In the first half of 2023, 13.9 thousand new Ukrainian companies were registered, which accounted for as much as 87% of the number of all companies with this capital entered in the database in the whole of 2022. Since the beginning of 2023, we have seen the creation of more than 2 thousand Ukrainian JDGs every month. Ukrainian companies accounted for in the first half of 2023. 67%. of all new foreign economic activities and 10% of all JDGs established during this period,” said PIE economic foresight team manager Katarzyna Dębkowska.

More than half (61%) of foreign sole proprietorships registered from January 2022 to June 2023 have an owner with Ukrainian citizenship. In 2022, companies established by Ukrainian citizens accounted for 57% of companies opened by foreigners in Poland, and in the first half of 2023 it was almost 67%, it was also stated.

“23% of Ukrainian sole proprietorships are construction companies. A significant group of Ukrainian companies (18%) operate in the information and communication section, and 14% profile their activities in other service activities. Among the 7.2 thousand construction companies currently operating in Poland, the leading companies are those engaged in the execution of finishing works (29%) and construction works related to the erection of buildings (18%). Of the 5,500 firms in the IT and communications sector, 77% are involved in software-related activities. And among other service activities, where 4.3 thousand Ukrainian companies are located, 85% are hairdressing and beauty services,” Aleksandra Wejt-Knyzewska, senior analyst of PIE’s economic foresight team, said.

Most Ukrainian JDGs operate in Mazovia (24%). Other voivodeships where Ukrainian businesses were quite often established were Lower Silesia (15%), Lesser Poland (13%) and Pomerania (11%), it was stated.
