Skanska ups net profit in Czechia, Slovakia by 21 pct in 2022

Swedish construction company Skanska reported a net profit of CZK 487.4m in Czechia and Slovakia in 2022, 21 percent more yr/yr, while its operating revenues rose by 20.6 percent yr/yr to CZK 9.1bn, according to the company’s annual report.

In 2022, the construction market was mainly marked by the consequences of the post-pandemic situation and the war in Ukraine, said Michal Jurka, president of the business unit Skanska Central Europe and CEO of company Skanska a.s.

“While the impact of the government’s measures against the spread of COVID-19 had already virtually subsided by February, the invasion of Ukraine by Russia meant immediate changes in the labour market, a further increase in energy prices, a further deterioration in the availability of building materials and predictability of their prices and, as a result of all these influences, gradual double-digit inflation,” Jurka said.

These factors led to greater caution on the part of investors in building construction and, to some extent, civil engineering, he added.

According to data from the Czech Statistical Office (CSU), construction companies in the Czech Republic carried out 18 percent more construction work yr/yr with a total value of over CZK 680bn last year.

In 2022, Skanska completed for example the Nova Waltrovka residential project and finalised the PORT7 commercial premises, both in Prague. Transport construction projects included a bridge on the D10 motorway and sections of the D49 and D55 motorways, among others.
