Builders in the Czech Republic completed the most flats last year since 2007. The number of completed flats rose by 14 percent year-on-year to 39,398. At the same time, however, construction costs rose and the length of construction increased, the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) announced today. According to the ČSÚ, the highest number of flats was built in the Central Bohemia Region and Prague last year, while the lowest number of flats was completed in the Karlovy Vary Region.

More than half of the completed flats in the Czech Republic last year were family houses. “This was even the maximum for flats in family houses. No other year since the boom in the 1970s has seen more than 20,000 flats completed,” said Silvie Lukavcová from the ČSÚ’s Construction and Housing Statistics Department.

According to the ČSÚ, it was necessary to spend CZK 400,000 more on the construction of one flat in a family house and CZK 140,000 more in an apartment building. On average, it took 41 months to build an apartment house and 40 months to build a family house. The living area of an apartment remained almost unchanged from the previous year, averaging 71 square metres.

According to the statisticians, one fifth of the completed flats were in Central Bohemia, where two thirds of the flats were in family houses. In addition, the construction in the metropolis was traditionally driven by apartment buildings. Completed flats decreased year-on-year only in Vysočina and the South Moravian Region, the statisticians added.

The number of housing starts in the Czech Republic decreased by about 2,700 to 42,242 last year compared to the previous year.
