Construction of 568 flats started in South Bohemia in the first quarter of this year, which was 1.2 percent more than in the same period last year. On the other hand, statisticians recorded a 13.3 percent year-on-year drop in completed flats, with 497 flats approved by the authorities in the region between January and March this year. This is based on preliminary data published by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ).

Construction of new family houses in the south of Bohemia began with 234 flats, roughly half as many as in the same period last year. “Flats of this type accounted for only 41.2 per cent of construction starts in the region, which is a change from the long-term trend when flats in family houses prevailed,” said Irena Votrubová from the regional administration of the Czech Statistical Office in České Budějovice. Companies in southern Bohemia started building 223 new flats in new apartment buildings, 88 percent of which were in the Český Krumlov region. The number of flats under construction in the region accounted for six per cent of the national total.

In the first three months of this year, companies completed 497 apartments in the region, a year-on-year decrease of more than 13 percent. Over 80 per cent of all completions in South Bohemia in January to March were in new family homes. “On the contrary, a marked decline was observed in the number of completed flats in new apartment buildings, which decreased by more than two-thirds,” Votrubová said. In the region, companies completed 53 flats in new apartment buildings in the first quarter.
