Poland: Number of rented units from municipal housing stock fell by 2.7% y/y in 2022

GUS: The number of rented units from the municipal housing stock fell by 2.7% y/y in 2022.

The number of residential units for which leases were in force from the municipal housing stock at the end of 2022 (excluding replacement and temporary premises) amounted to 613,500, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) reported. Compared to 2021, their number decreased by 2.7%, with a 2.7% decrease in urban areas and a 3.3% decrease in rural areas. The usable area of rented units in Poland amounted to 27,679.2 thousand square meters and was smaller compared to 2021 by 406.3 thousand square meters or 1.4%.

A municipality’s housing stock should be understood as premises used to meet housing needs that are owned by the municipality, it was reported.

At the end of 2022, the usable area of rented housing units in urban areas amounted to 24,855.9 thousand square meters, and in rural areas to 2,823.4 thousand square meters. Compared to 2021, the usable area of rental housing units increased by 7.2% in urban areas, while in rural areas it increased by 25.6%. The number of concluded contracts in 2022 increased by 9.3% compared to 2021 and amounted to 47,890, with an increase of 7.8% in urban areas and 20.4% in rural areas, it was announced.

GUS also reported that the number of social rental contracts for housing from the municipal housing stock at the end of 2022 amounted to 65,200, with a total floor area of the units of 2,298,500 sqm. Compared to 2021, the number of social tenancy agreements in force decreased by 1.6%, and the usable area increased by 0.5%. The number of social tenancy agreements in force for residential units compared to 2021 in urban areas decreased by 0.7 thousand, or 1.2%, and in rural areas by 0.3 thousand, or 4.1%.

As of December 31, 2022, there were 126.3 thousand households awaiting rental housing in Poland. The majority of households waiting for rental housing was recorded in cities, i.e. 108.4 thousand, which accounted for 85.8% of the total. In cities, the number of waiting households decreased by 2% compared to 2021, while in rural areas it decreased by 2.8%, it concluded.
