Construction of 1981 flats started in South Bohemia last year, down 31 percent year-on-year. The number of apartment buildings that started construction fell by almost three quarters. Builders in the region completed 2016 flats last year, 282 more than the previous year. This is according to information published by the Czech Statistical Office (GUS). Large construction companies also registered a decline in housing construction last year, especially in the case of apartment buildings.

South Bohemia accounted for less than five percent of the number of flats started in the Czech Republic last year. Construction of flats in family houses was significantly predominant in the region, accounting for more than two thirds of all flats under construction. “An unprecedented decline was recorded in the construction of flats in new apartment buildings,” said Irena Votrubová from the regional administration of the Czech Statistical Office in České Budějovice. In 2022, 304 of these flats will be built in South Bohemia, down almost 74 percent year-on-year.

Compared to 2021, only two districts started building more flats in the region last year. According to the statisticians, this was most pronounced in Písek, where the increase was almost 30 percent. Despite this, the Písek district accounted for the smallest share of the number of flats under construction in the region, namely six per cent. The largest number of flats in apartment buildings was built last year in České Budějovice, almost 57 percent of them. The number of flats that started to be built last year decreased nationwide. There were 41,546 flats, down 7.7 percent year-on-year.

In the South Bohemia Region, construction companies completed 2016 flats last year, up 17 percent year-on-year. According to the CZSO, the region has traditionally been dominated by flats in new family houses, accounting for almost two-thirds of all completed flats. The largest number of flats was completed in the České Budějovice district, almost half of all of them, the least in Strakonice, where, according to the statistics, housing construction has been in decline for some time. In the Czech Republic, statisticians recorded 39,460 completed flats last year, up 14.1 percent year-on-year.
