Construction output in the Czech Republic returned to growth in October, rising by one percent year-on-year in real terms and 1.8 percent month-on-month. In September, construction output recorded a revised annual decline of 2.9 percent. In October, civil engineering, i.e. building construction, was particularly buoyant, up 1.2 per cent year-on-year. Output of civil engineering construction, which includes the building of roads or telecommunications and power grids, rose 0.4 percent. The Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) reported this today.

“Construction output rose in October both year-on-year and month-on-month, with civil engineering driving the growth. Engineering constructions slightly exceeded the level of October last year and recorded a slight month-on-month growth compared to September,” said Radek Matějka, Director of the Department of Statistics of Agriculture and Forestry, Industry, Construction and Energy.

Building authorities issued 7,178 building permits in October, down 6.5 percent year-on-year. The indicative value of these constructions amounted to CZK 38.2 billion and increased by 11.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

According to Petra Cuřínová, head of the department of statistics of construction and housing construction, housing construction starts are further on the decline. The number of housing starts fell by 27.7 percent year-on-year to 2,598 flats. “In particular, the number of housing starts in apartment buildings is declining, but single-family houses are not currently being permitted much either, across all regions,” Cuřínová said. The number of completed flats in October fell by 0.6 percent year-on-year to 3,341 flats.

The average number of registered employees in the construction industry increased by one percent year-on-year, while their average gross monthly wages rose by 11.3 percent.
