Complete restoration of the Karl IV square in Mělník could be provided by the developer. On the square is a complex of buildings from the socialist period. The city has been planning to demolish them for a long time. Another part of the buildings belongs to a private owner who met with city representatives before the elections. The city will not make a complete transformation on its own, it is a project worth hundreds of millions of crowns, according to the mayor of Mělník, Tomáš Martinec (ODS).

The buildings should be replaced by new ones, which would contain both apartments and commercial spaces. “In this regard, we are following the line of the previous city management,” the mayor said.

The city has been planning the demolition of the buildings for many years, but the start of work was complicated by the fact that part of the building belonged to Russian owners. This year it was acquired by a private company. According to the mayor, even the new city management could imagine cooperation. He wants to discuss it in the coming weeks. Depending on the results, the restoration of the square would be dealt with together, or the city would separately issue a tender with specific conditions for the developer.

In the past, the city commissioned a study to restore the square. It included greenery, building places for meeting or modifying parking. The construction of the never-completed buildings began before 1989. The usability of the buildings would be difficult even after a costly reconstruction.
