Prague public transit vehicles covered 195.8 million kilometres last year, 600,000 kilometres more year on year, and carried 738 million passengers, according to 2021’s yearbook of Prague-based company Technical Road Administration (TSK).
Total costs of public transport in the capital amounted to Kc20.7bn.
Buses were the busiest in the capital last year, covering 79.3 million kilometres. Metro ranked second with 56.8 million kilometres, followed by trams that travelled about 2.7 million kilometres fewer. The shortest distance was covered by trains.
In comparison with 2020, the distance travelled increased in buses and metro while falling in trams and trains.
Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, both the number of passengers and the distance travelled declined in 2020-2021. None of the types of transport mentioned reached the same number of kilometres travelled as before the pandemic.
Even though buses covered the longest distance, the metro transported the biggest number of passengers, carrying almost 237.95 million people last year. Buses would win in terms of passenger numbers only if suburban bus lines were included. Trams were the second most used type of transport in Prague, followed by city buses. Over one million passengers used the funicular to Petrin hill and 469,210 people used ferries.
The Prague Integrated Transport system comprises three metro lines, 35 tram lines, 171 bus lines and 122 suburban bus lines, 39 trains, seven ferries and the Petrin funicular.
