Central Bohemian Food Bank is running out of supplies, giving food to 150 Ukrainian families daily

The Central Bohemian Region has so far spent over CZK 15 million on helping refugees from Ukraine. For the accommodation of refugees from Ukraine, of whom almost 42,000 registered in Central Bohemia by Wednesday last week, they have not yet had to use temporary emergency shelter in the form of gyms or tents in the region. The Food Bank for Prague and the Central Bohemian Region records a decline in stocks of perishable foodstuffs, and distributes food to approximately 150 Ukrainian families daily. This follows from the information provided by the spokesman of the governor’s office, David Šíma, and for the food bank in Prague, Věra Doušová.

“The funds issued so far to help refugees represent mainly a financial donation in the amount of ten million crowns for humanitarian aid to Ukraine and five million crowns for securing transport evacuation connections. for example, catering,” said Šíma. The region also reconstructed flats for refugees in Šlapanice in the Kladno region for one million crowns and set aside 1.5 million crowns for the equipment of regional accommodation facilities.

The region will spend tens of millions to pay a state-approved contribution in connection with the accommodation of refugees in commercial buildings or municipal facilities. However, these should be reimbursed from the state budget.

Standard accommodation has so far been provided for refugees in the region. “We consider accommodation in the form of tents or gyms to be the last resort. The number of free capacities is constantly changing over time, and we also have dozens of seats in connection with the conclusion of contracts with commercial accommodation providers,” said Šíma. He added that each of the 26 municipalities with extended powers in the region should have prepared temporary accommodation for 50 people, which can be activated within 24 hours if necessary.

The food bank for Prague and the Central Bohemian Region is dwindling stocks, there are fewer issued stocks than received ones. “Sometimes we import something from the central warehouse of the Federation of Food Banks in Dubč, but there is less and less durable food. We try to find food from producers and chains, and so far we manage to satisfy both our clients and Ukrainian families with food, But the problem is starting to be a lack of food from producers,” said Doušová. According to her, canned food, pâtés, milk, butter, oil and basic hygiene items are completely missing.

“While donors bring around five to ten bags of food a day, we have to deliver around 300. In addition, we supply food to 260 of our customer organizations, the situation is deteriorating day by day,” Doušová added. The bank’s staff bundles food from the chains in several deliveries a day, but they would welcome more help from producers, for example in the form of food that is of the wrong weight or cannot go on sale for any other reason.
