The state-owned company ČD-Telematika has deposited CZK 200 million in the closed bank Sberbank CZ. This was stated today by the E15.cz server. ČD-Telematika, whose profit before tax last year amounted to CZK 66.9 million, is trying to get its money back. Shortly after the Russian attack on Ukraine in February, Sberbank CZ, which has ties to Russia, closed branches in the Czech Republic and subsequently stopped transactions. On February 28, the Czech National Bank (CNB) announced that it had begun the process of revoking the Sberbank CZ license.
“We can confirm that ČD-Telematika had more than 200 million crowns deposited in Sberbank,” company spokesman Ondřej Micka told the server.
According to him, the company cooperates with eight different banks. She cooperated with Sberbank ČD-Telematika for seven years. Both Sberbank and no other bank are and have not been identified by the CNB until Monday, February 28, as a bank with a potential risk of loss of solvency, Micka said.
Russia launched a military offensive against Ukraine on February 24. At Sberbank’s branches in the Czech Republic, queues of people then formed who wanted to cancel their account or inquired about the operation of the bank. On February 25, Sberbank CZ announced the closure of branches and later also the suspension of transactions. On 28 February, the CNB took steps to revoke Sberbank CZ’s banking license and issued a preliminary measure preventing the bank from handling its assets and liabilities. Russia’s parent company Sberbank announced in March that it would leave Europe.
Funds from Sberbank CZ are paid out to clients through the Financial Market Guarantee System by Komerční banka. The guarantee system will pay out a maximum of CZK 2,499,500 per depositor. According to E15.cz, more than 2,600 clients have an over-limit amount deposited with Sberbank, who now, like ČD-Telematika, have to wait to see if there are any funds left in insolvency proceedings. In addition to ČD-Telematika, some cities or regions have deposited money in Sberbank CZ. For example, the Vysočina Region has CZK 2.4 billion left in the bank.
