Together, T-Mobile and Vodafone will build almost one million optical Internet connections, enabling speeds of over one gigabit per second (Gbit / s). In addition to joint construction, the already built connections in Prague, Brno and other cities will be mutually accessible. The companies stated this in a joint press release.
Already at the end of 2020, T-Mobile signed an agreement with CETIN on the joint construction of optical connections for hundreds of thousands of households. T-Mobile currently has over 284,000 connections. Vodafone offers an Internet connection with a speed of one Gbit / s for 1.6 million households and companies, mainly thanks to the acquisition of the largest domestic cable network UPC.
Since the agreement, both companies have promised to significantly accelerate the digitalisation of the Czech Republic. In practice, the project will also bring a more efficient and gentle construction process, for example, significantly less independent excavation work will be needed and the total construction time will be shortened.
“Vodafone already offers one Gbit / s Internet connection for 1.6 million households and companies. After the completion of the project, Vodafone will offer multi-gigabit connection to more than half of Czech households. At the same time, we will continue to improve the parameters of our existing network. “For this, the Czech Republic should be one of the most advanced countries in the world. And for that, quality networks are needed,” said Petr Dvořák, CEO of Vodafone.
“A stable and affordable connection that handles large amounts of data is absolutely crucial for the competitiveness of local companies, but the whole country. Last year we managed to bring 284,000 households in 75 cities to optics and the cooperation agreement will allow us to significantly accelerate We are bringing our know-how to build optical infrastructure and state-of-the-art FTTH – Fiber to The Home technology into the project,” added José Perdomo Lorenzo, CEO of T-Mobile.
On the built connections, operators will compete with retail offers, which could bring lower prices to customers. The joint construction project is just beginning and T-Mobile and Vodafone will inform about its further details later, according to today’s announcement.
With 6.3 million customers, T-Mobile is the largest mobile operator on the market and its fifth-generation network covers 21 percent of the Czech population. The company belongs to the international Deutsche Telekom group.
Vodafone Czech Republic is part of the global Vodafone Group. Vodafone provides services to more than 4.5 million customers, of which approximately 3.9 million are mobile services, another approximately 700,000 are fixed services.
