Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian are once again presenting themselves at MIPIM

16 March 2022

After a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic, the city of Ostrava and the Moravian-Silesian Region are once again presenting themselves at the prestigious international investment fair MIPIM in Cannes, France, which takes place from 15 to 18 March. Investors are offered attractive development areas in the city, including its historic center. The town’s lands in the Mošnov industrial zone are also presented. The Moravian-Silesian Region is mainly presented by an ambitious project of landscape restoration after mining in the Karviná region, which offers a huge potential for future growth. The central theme of the stand that the city will present at the fair this year is the project of the concert hall, which is to become one of the symbols of the new changes that Ostrava is going through.

“In recent years, Ostrava has become a city of new opportunities, which the city management actively supports and tries to create suitable conditions for investors for further development. The city then implements a number of its own investment projects in the areas of housing, culture, education and infrastructure. The completed reconstruction of the former town slaughterhouse, which will become the seat of the contemporary art gallery, the already intensively prepared concert hall or the planned new building of the Moravian-Silesian Scientific Library have the potential to confirm Ostrava’s position as a center of creative industry not only in the Moravian-Silesian region,” said Mayor Tomáš Macura.

At this year’s MIPIM, Ostrava offers areas for housing and services on Ostrčilova, Středoškolská, Plzeňská, Českobratrská and Masná streets. It is always a well-thought-out, comprehensively prepared offer respecting the specifics of a specific location. This guarantees the provision of urban quality, as well as its functionality in relation to the current surrounding buildings. The city strives to consolidate the area and bring unused areas back to life. The priority is to bring higher architectural value to the planned new projects and reconstructions of existing buildings.

At the same time, the city is coming up with new strategies that will bring benefits to both parties – the city and investors. One of them is, for example, a combination of private and public investments, which has proved its worth in the preparation of the Nové Lauby residential residence and which is also offered to potential applicants in other planned apartment buildings and residential areas – for example on Ostrčilova Street. One of the conditions for the sale of land at selected locations may be the provision of part of the newly built housing stock for affordable housing.

“Investors themselves have responded to the friendly business environment, support and openness to new investment opportunities on the part of the city, for which Ostrava has become an interesting location. The result of earlier years of the fair is, for example, the city’s newly emerging partnership with LinkCity on the Residence Stodolní project,” said Deputy Mayor Zuzana Bajgarová.

The current estimate of the total gross floor area on which new construction is underway or planned is almost 230,000 sqm, of which 115,000 sqm is residential construction, 54,000 sqm is for multifunctional and office projects, 51,300 sqm for public services and 9,700 sqm for infrastructure.

“The MIPIM International Fair is a prestigious globally recognized event that offers a great opportunity to raise the profile of our region to potential future investors. Investors make up about a quarter of all visitors to the exhibition, and businessmen from hundreds of countries around the world come to Cannes. I believe that the Moravian-Silesian Region has a lot to offer them, we are progressive in development and we are not afraid of change. On the contrary, we are working intensively to transform the region. We want to introduce potential investors to the opportunities associated with the mountain landscape, significant development areas for further use and show the further potential of our region. We would like to draw your attention to, for example, the Služovice Development Complex, the Palkovická Barracks or, for example, Dukla Industrial Park. We will also present these areas via a QR code, which will allow those interested to view their project cards. I am convinced that our region is building a position of location interesting for business, I believe that participation in the MIPIM fair will support our efforts,” said the Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region Ivo Vondrák.

One of the development areas that the Moravian-Silesian Region will present at the international fair will be the area in the Karviná region marked by coal mining. This area between the towns of Havířov, Karviná and Orlová with an area of 62 km2 is solved by the transformation program Pohornická krajina, abbreviated POHO2030. Selected strategic locations in POHO represent a unique investment opportunity in the center of one of the most densely populated Czech regions, with excellent transport accessibility and a sufficient supply of skilled labor. Projects from newly emerging startups to investments in the field of energy or the use of hydrogen are already being addressed in the area. The goal of the Moravian-Silesian Region is to revive this locality, to return it to people not only for spending free time, but also for the business of smaller or larger investors.

Investors from the area leisure activities and tourism could certainly appeal to areas in the area near the reservoir Slezská Harta. “Currently, the dam serves fish farming and recreation, recreation, but also as an emergency flood protection. However, there is a lack of modern infrastructure in the immediate vicinity of the dam, which would meet the demands of potential visitors. In this sense, the area has significant potential for further development of tourism. Land and development areas in the surrounding municipalities are ready for immediate sale with an area of approximately 105 hectares. Municipalities have already developed studies of possible solutions for the use of land and areas. These are sports and recreational areas such as an aqua park, yacht club, fishing area and other various types of sports grounds,” said Jan Krkoška, Deputy Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region for Regional Development and Tourism. next.

The Moravian-Silesian Region will also present the Služovická barracks complex at the fair. It was built in the 1960s for the purpose of air defense of the area. Currently, this location has the potential as a place to spend free time. The village of Služovice has prepared a stop study including the construction of a brewery with a boarding house, a lookout tower, a mini zoo or non-traditional elements for leisure entertainment. Due to the nature of the area, there is also the possibility of creating an educational-entertaining interactive center with military or war themes. There is no similar area with leisure use in the wider area and thus offers a potential investor the opportunity to create a sought-after tourist destination.
